4 Signs of Mold Growth in Your Home

Sometimes, mold is obvious with fuzzy green spots on the wall or a black substance coating the grout in between your shower tiles. Other times, mold is sneaky. It can lurk in your house behind the walls, up in the roof, under the floorboards, and in other hidden places. The effects of hidden household mold can be subtle and come on gradually but, eventually, it will make its presence known—you just have to know what to look for.

Watch out for the red flags below that signal the growth of mold in your home!

1) Warping Walls

If you find evidence of moisture damage on your property, it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re developing a mold problem too. When pipes leak or too much condensation accumulates, you’ll start to see it in your walls. Look for bubbling or cracking paint, peeling wallpaper, water spots or areas of discoloration on the walls, floor, or ceiling.

2) Musty Odor

Do you keep catching a whiff of something that makes your nose crinkle while walking around your house? It may be a sign that mold is hiding out somewhere. If you notice a persistent unpleasant odor—even a mild one—that continues to linger after you’ve cleaned, especially if it gets stronger in one part of the house or seems to be coming from your HVAC system, you should have your home tested for mold.

3) Health Issues

Long-term or overexposure to mold can cause physical symptoms that mimic a cold, asthma, or allergies, including:

  • Coughing

  • Sneezing

  • Wheezing or trouble breathing

  • Itchy/watery eyes

  • Congestion or runny nose

  • Rash/irritated skin

  • Sore/itchy throat

  • Chronic fatigue

When household members begin to experience these symptoms and they just won’t seem to go away, mold may be the culprit.

4) Visible Spots

As we mentioned earlier, sometimes mold makes its presence loud and clear. If you’re seeing visible mold growth, you need to have your home tested and treated as soon as possible. Visible mold can indicate and even deeper infestation within your home. Mold may grow in spots, clusters, or have a thread-like appearance. It can also be many different colors—gray, green, brown, black, white, or even, when growing behind walls, orange, pink or purple.
