It’s that time of year for hanging lights around the house to celebrate the season! Let's keep everyone safe and enjoy the season with this great checklist.
- Make sure all of the lights and extension cords are rated for outdoor use. LED lights are recommended, as they are cool to the touch, unlike incandescent bulbs.
- Inspect and discard damaged lights, including those that have unstable connections, exposed wires, or broken sockets.
- Replace any broken or missing bulbs before hanging the lights. Be sure that the replacement bulbs you select are the correct size and wattage.
- Never connect more than the recommended number of light strings. LED lights can have far more than the older incandescent bulbs
- It is best to install lights from the ladder, but if you do need to work on the roof use proper precautions and have a spotter.
- Inspect the ladder before use. Use a wooden or fiberglass ladder when decorating as metal ladders conduct electricity.
- Use the right ladder height; ensure ladders extend past the edge of the roof 3 feet per recommendation.
- Don’t use nails or tacks to secure your outdoor Christmas lights. Be sure your lights are strung tightly to avoid damage from the wind.
- If installing exterior lights on your trees, do not install them if that tree is in contact with any power lines.
- You can organize and label your strands so you can keep track of what you inspect and replace throughout the years.
